“On behalf of Ju-Jitsu Denmark, we wish to formally inform you that Denmark will not participate in the 2026 World Championships scheduled to take place in Abu Dhabi, UAE, in August 2026.
We were both surprised and deeply concerned when informed that JJIF had maintained the decision to hold the Youth World Championships in Abu Dhabi, as well as the decision to relocate and bring forward the World Championships for Seniors, Masters, and Para athletes by approximately two and a half months.
Background and consultations
Following the announcement, we held consultations with the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and legal advisers from the National Olympic Committee and Sports Confederation of Denmark. Based on these consultations, we concluded that Denmark could not participate under the circumstances, particularly given the security situation in the region and the involvement of young athletes.
At that time, the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs advised against all non-essential travel to the region. Consequently, our travel insurance coverage would have been significantly limited, exposing Ju-Jitsu Denmark to considerable financial risk and the potential for substantial losses.
Practical and sporting considerations
In addition, the late changes to the schedule and the advancement of the championships have created significant challenges in relation to planning, finances, and athlete preparation. These circumstances have made it increasingly difficult to ensure a responsible and well-prepared participation process.
Current assessment
We have reconsidered our position shortly before the registration deadline. However, we have concluded that the current situation remains too uncertain. The ceasefire has been broken, and even if it were to be re-established, we would not consider the conditions sufficiently reliable to ensure the safety, security, and well-being of our athletes and delegation.
Final decision
For these reasons, and with sincere regret, we must inform you that the Danish team will not participate in any category of the 2026 World Championships in Abu Dhabi. This decision has not been taken lightly and is based solely on our responsibility to safeguard our athletes and delegation.
We remain respectful of JJIF’s work and the efforts involved in organising international championships, and we sincerely hope that future events will take place under circumstances that allow Denmark to participate fully and safely.
